Anatomy Lessons: Lecture & Discussion
With Karen Ingham & Professor Deanna Petheridge
In the unique environment of Europe's oldest surgical operating theatre, the artist Karen Ingham will discuss her work with Professor Deanna Petheridge, author of The Quick and the Dead, who will give an illustrated talk on the history and context of anatomical representation.
ANATOMY LESSONS is an interdisciplinary project produced by Karen Ingham, which brings the private and evocative world of the anatomical theatre into the public domain. Anatomy Lessons is an innovative re-visitation of anatomical art and medical history in the light of contemporary lens-based imaging techniques, consisting of large-scale photo-works and video installations that reflect on the 17th century suite of Dutch Anatomy Lessons paintings, resulting from the artist's collaboration with the medical schools and anatomy theatres of Padua, Edinburgh, Dublin, London, and Cardiff.
Selected works will be exhibited at the Old Operating Theatre Museum, the Wellcome Library for the Understanding and History of Medicine (183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE), with the main exhibition located in the Dissecting Rooms of the Division of Anatomy, Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Biomedical Sciences, the Hodgkin Building, King's College London, Guy's Hospital Campus, London SE1 (Open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.).
Guy's Campus is opposite the Old Operating Theatre Museum, and can be reached via the Colonnade entrance in St Thomas' Street. The Hodgkin Building is in the south west corner of the square. Visitors are asked to register at the reception desk.
