WORKSHOP AIMS
A science graduate may produce over 200 laboratory reports before
graduation but may never have written about science in any other
style or for any audience but an academic. This situation may not
equip them for working in an industrial or commercial environment
where they will have to communicate with a wide range of
professionals, or in other sectors where they may be required to
communicate with the general public. In addition, many new
undergraduates are seriously challenged by the standards of written
English required by the HE environment and require support and
careful feedback in order to make progress.
The growth in the use of continuous assessment as opposed to written
examinations raises serious concerns about the prevention, detection
and punishment of plagiarism for the HE community.
This workshop will look at a range of science based activities which
enable physical science students to extend their written
communication skills in ways that make them more useful to
employers. Mechanisms for supporting helping those who require
extra support will also be considered. The challenges of detecting and
dealing with plagiarism with also be explored and the use of
technology as an aid will be discussed.
PROGRAMME TO INCLUDE:
Support students in the use of academic English
Extending scientists communication skills
Writing for different audiences
Detecting and preventing plagiarism
