I am a manager with a small company which is working in the Argentine High
Cordillera.
We are starting maintenance of a high altitude section of 150km of
compacted gravel road (this is a supply route – people fuel etc) through
the Southern Hemisphere Winter 2004 for a major mining firm. The road
commences at 3000masl and traverses 2 high passes (5000 & 4800masl
respectively), with the majority of the road over 4000masl. The climatic
conditions which lead to my approach to you include wind speeds in excess
of 60m/s (220kmph) during events (extremes to plus 30m/s are fairly
regular). Snow fall varies seasonally from 5 to 11 metres (needless to
say extreme low temps, snow accumulation/avalanches and ice formation are
parallel issues).
Following a risk assessment process, we are now developing a series of
safe work procedures (SWP´s). Vehicle roll over is one of our key areas
of concern.
I am interested in receiving advice /information from persons who may have
some graphical/tabulated data on veh cross-section / weight / wind speed
interaction in terms of veh stability limits. We have a range of vehicles
from light pickups through, passenger buses to semi-trailers (tractor-
trailer / articulated lorries?) transiting this route.
This route is active at this moment so any feedback which may allow
immediate steps to be taken will be very much appreciated.
If anyone wishes to talk with me direct, my cel number is + 51 1 97515192
Kind Regards
Karl
