Dear Alan,
I'm not sure if this information is common knowledge. The questions
you have asked - how do you convince a person to look at things in
other ways - touches on the work of Mezirow in his theory of
transformative learning. Yet in society, this appears not to be
highly successful unless the key factor in his theory - the element
of disorientation or confusion - is present. So the question may be -
how does one convince others to see other truths, myths or realities
if the process of transformation of an individual view/truth requires
some kind of major event, catastrophe or crisis? Freire's work with
assisting communities to change their narratives without dependence
on the factor of disorientation or confusion, is quite enlightening.
Communities can be empowered to engage and then act to change the
stories/narratives that are sometimes imposed on them, and create a
new belief system/narrative that is self-generated, built on the
values important to the community.
regards, teena
