Dear Colleagues,
One of the valuable purposes of this list is to serve as a forum
for research requests.
In the past few weeks, we have seen requests concerning
philosophy of design, design support programs, and now innovation
studies.
These requests are often followed by a number of notes sent
off-list and a few replies that trickle in on the list over a week
or two.
I'd like to suggest a better way of working that uses the
value of our community as a knowledge resource to create
useful information resources while avoiding the slightly
random flow of disconnected notes on an increasingly
active list.
On lists in many fields, the practice of posting research
requests is that a list member posts a request, together with
a stated commitment to gather responses and post them altogether
in a compilation. (This is what Cindy Jackson did with her
philosophy compilation.)
The author of the request explicitly asks that replies be sent
direct to him or her off-list, and he or she takes responsibility
for the compilation that is later sent to all members. An extensive
compilation may take several posts, as Cindy's did, but they come
in a labeled series at one time -- this makes them easy to find in
the archive, and it makes them easy to use for further teaching
and research.
Research requests are an important feature of a list such as this.
I suggest that we encourage such requests.
May I also suggest that we develop a list practice in which we
post replies direct to the authors, whose commitment it will be to
gather and post a compilation of responses?
Thanks.
Ken
