This month in architectural record (vol 1, 2004) there is an interview
with historian Victoria Newhouse whose forthcoming book
"Art/Power/Place" (Monacelli Press) includes a discussion and criticism
of the problems with and successes in art exhibition in recently built
museums. From the interview it seems that she combines a discussion
of formal concerns (material, color, texture of the walls and floors
with available light either natural or electric) with social/cultural
concerns (why are black velvet walls successful in Las Vegas when they
wouldn't work in New York?)
While the interview in AR is based on Newhouse's criticism rather than
research, some of this discussion might be extrapolated out to other
sorts of exhibition design than that of fine art. The interview has
some nice images to illustrate Newhouse's points.
Best,
Alan
