I have read through your notes with interest as I have recently
attended a
Business Travel Health conference in London which was organised and
chaired
by Greta. The conference was excellent and the first speaker
particularly
good. Dr Michael Bagshaw leads the British Airways team of
Occupational and
aviation physicians and is also a holder of an Airline Transport Pilot
licence. His credentials go on..... He spent much of his time
dispelling
the myths surrounding air travel i.e. Traveller's Thrombosis and
cosmic
radiation.
He informed us that over the last decade there had been no clinical
studies
looking at asymptomatic travellers and the evidence is largely
circumstantial. In March 2001, WHO reported a possible LINK between
air
travel and venous thrombosis - not a CAUSE. The incidence in the
general
population in 1/1000/yr. There are more cases reported in coach travel
than
air travel. He also pointed out that there has been an increase in
gastic
bleeds due to taking aspirin and reminded us that aspirin is effective
for
ARTERIAL thrombosis and not VENOUS thrombosis. He was very critical of
the
tabloid press for their reporting on the few cases (of which he gave
us
further information).
Interesting lecture and very thought provoking. Should we really
advise
taking aspirin etc risking gastric bleeds for such a minute risk???
If the conference is ever repeated I advise anyone involved in travel
health
to attend. It has made me revise my thinking and actions.
Oh dear - looks like an essay!!!

Hi Tracie,
Hope these are of some use.
Travax is a Scottish based organization, they also give on line up to
date info on vaccination etc requirements, risk assessment forms etc
highly recommended, I think you may need to pay a small charge for
this
service.
best wishes
