My concern about OH certification is that it will suddenly explode a volume
of work and OH time that the organisation is not used to paying for (GP
certs and the GP time is currently free).
Far more helpful would surely be an HR policy that asks employees (who are
after all adults) to self certify and then apply robust procedures depending
on the nature of the absence, referring into OH when the colleague expresses
concerns about their health in relation to their ability to:
- carry out their normal duties
- attend work on a regular basis
- attend the workplace due to immuno compromisation (or whatever the word
is)
or where HR or the employee are concerned that:
- work may aggravate a pre-existing problem
- the health problem may affect people or processes at work
I have recently devised a checklist from our rehabilitation guidelines that
HR can use as a tool to discuss health related absence or performance
problems with employees. With training and support this works well and is
considered to be fair and equitable by the local union reps. We have not
yet got rid of the requirement for GP certs, but I'm sure it will come. I
would be very interested to hear what other people think.
