Dear List,
I'm really proud of the quality of the debate this month, especially
those like Aileen, Gloria and Grant and many others who have been
brave enough to reveal the process behind their own experience.
Strangely, the mention of that little word "art" seems to have ground
us to a short halt, so may I suggest that a way forward might be in
getting back to the starting question?
In putting together some examples
<http://www.crumbweb.org/crumb/phase3/append/taxontab.htm> of
categories (towards taxonomies?) and keywords (towards critical
vocabularies?) I was hoping to identify some interesting patterns.
Looking at the keywords in particular, I tried to group these
keywords, and arranged them very roughly into 'words about':
Art
Media
Behaviours/Characteristics
Social/Political
So, for example, the Langlois keywords are almost all about Media,
whilst the Multimediale keywords (in common with Dietz and Tribe)
show the highest number of words concerning
Behaviours/Characteristics (for example 'performative' or
'interactive') with a few Social/Political ('communal', 'hack').
So, to return to our very first starting point of Multimediale, was
this move from media to behaviours a deliberate one? Are we really
'post-media' and Lev Manovich or Steve Dietz
<http://www.yproductions.com/WebWalkAbout/archives/000578.html > have
suggested? Are 'behaviours' flexible enough to be the way forward
without pinning the butterfly?
Yours,
Beryl
