OPEN HISTORY TIMELINE
http://www.designtimeline.org

As a core part of the Decade of Webdesign project, we have initiated
an 'open research' website/database into the history of design on
the web. Navigate a decade of webdesign guided by it's frequently
answered or asked questions, browse answers and questions by year,
search word or popularity, add images, comments and links to make a
collective history of the web as it developed, write your own
questions and respond to those of others: please, make history!

A GUIDE TO OPEN CONTENT LICENSES
Lawrence Liang

Copyright is one of the most hotly contested areas of contemporary
cultures. Many feel that current copyright regulations fail to meet
the needs of information society and the realities of creative work.
Many new practices of copyright - licenses which maintain the chosen
rights of authors, but which work with rather than block the creative
opportunities of the digital public domain - have emerged over the
last few years.
The Guide to Open Content Licensing is the first systematic survey of
the major open content licenses. Presented in a handy pocket-format
it is designed both for non-specialists want to choose an appropriate
use of copyright and for people who want solid background information.
Whether you are an artist, a peer-to-peer file sharer, or author of
scientific papers the Guide to Open Content Licenses will provide you
with an invaluable oversight and a how-to guide.

The guide can be downloaded as pdf or html at: http://pzwart.wdka.hro.nl/mdr/pubsfolder/opencontent/

COPYRIGHT, CULTURAL PRODUCTION AND OPEN CONTENT LICENSING

Lawrence Liang

In this on-line publication, Lawrence Liang discusses at length the
history and practice of copyright and open content licensing for the
cultural domain. The academic paper is the outcome of his three month
research period at the Media Design Research Programme.

FREESTYLE FLOSS IN DESIGN
Full transcription of the seminar:

Over the last few years 'Free Libre and Open Source Software' FLOSS,
a form of collaborative software development has proven itself as a
driving force of digital networks, especially the internet. Now this
approach is beginning to open up new approaches in design and visual
culture. In the seminar 'Freestyle, Floss InDesign' we discussed this
development with designers, developers and economists.
