Hi Dave,
The pictures to which you refer are to be found in the Sheffield
City Libraries, local history section. I made copies of these and have them
somewhere and if all else fails will endeavour to dig them out.
As a matter of interest, Brindley used to live near me on Abbeydale
Road, Millhouses, and I visited him once. This, before the days I was
interested in mines and mining. He had boxes and boxes of 10"x8" prints
stacked up against the walls, (in his downstairs bedroom) many of which were
of Derbyshire mining scenes. He wrote a series of articles in the Sheffield
Telegraph about his so-called mining exploits in which he refers, inter
alia, to seeing spiders as big as sparrows in the mines around Windmill (if
I remember correctly). All makes most amusing reading if you have time to
trawl though his press cuttings at Sheffield Libraries. (I made some copies
of these too). He used to trundle around the mining areas of Derbyshire on
an ancient motor cycle.
Sadly, I think that when Brindley died (he used to run an outfit
called Sheffield News pictures from his Abbeydale Road address) many of his
original prints were destroyed by the family, despite efforts to preserve
them. The Brindley family were owners of a Sheffield Tool works I think.
Any problems in finding these pictures, please let me know and I'll
see what I can do.
