Chris,
I visited most of the bigger Galloway sites a few years back and photos and
descriptions can be found on the the Scottish Cultural Resources web site
www.scran.ac.uk; it's a hard site to navigate and you have to subscribe to
get full access but try typing in lead mine or copper mine and see what
comes up.
Following the initial visits three sites were identified for futher work and
surveyed in 2002 by the Centre for Field Archaeology and Stranraer Museum.
These are Woodhead mine at Carsphairn (smelt mill, workers' housing,
school), Pibble Mine at Creetown (Cornish engine house, reservoir, crusher)
and Silver Rigg in the Cree Valley (wheel pit, opencut, reservoir, lade
system). Contact me off list if you would like copies of the reports or info
on any of the other sites.
