I'm not sure if copyright lapses on maps. The terms and conditions on
www.old-maps.co.uk clearly state:
"You must not use the images for financial gain.
You may download a maximum of 10 images from the site for use on
personal web pages providing the following credit appears below all
images:
Image produced from the www.old-maps.co.uk service with permission of
Landmark Information Group Ltd. and Ordnance Survey
where www.old-maps.co.uk is hyperlinked to http://www.old-maps.co.uk,
Landmark Information Group Ltd. is hyperlinked to
http://www.landmark-information.co.uk and Ordnance Survey is hyperlinked
to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk
You may, where the use of the map information is a tool for the
day-to-day activities associated with the running of your organisation
or where the map information is to be used for teaching purposes :-
make up to 500 hard copies per year for inclusion in leaflets or private
journals provided there is no financial gain by you in respect of
publishing the mapping;
make electronic transmissions of any graphic image, produced
specifically for the purposes of allowing the recipient to produce
leaflets or journals including the map image provided there is no direct
financial benefit to the recipient;
pass the mapping information to contractors or agents when undertaking
publishing activities on your behalf, providing that you are responsible
to Landmark and Ordnance Survey for the acts and omissions of the
contractor or agent, and that at the end of the contractor's or agent's
use of the mapping the contractor or agent returns the mapping to you
and destroys all copies - and providing there is no financial gain by
you in respect of publishing the mapping;
You must:
include the correct Copyright acknowledgement as follows :-
Copyright C and/or Database Right Landmark Information Group and
Ordnance Survey Crown Copyright and/or Database Right 2002. All rights
reserved.
send Landmark (Customer Services, 7 Abbey Court, Eagle Way, Exeter, EX2
7HY, UK), a copy of any finished publication within 14 days of
completion. This excludes teaching material;
You may not:
give other people permission to copy the mapping material in your
publications without our written permission;
sell, resell or exploit for commercial purposes any of the information
held on or accessed via this site. This is expressly prohibited.
Where you wish to undertake any additional activities restricted in the
above conditions, please contact us."
These are all old victorian maps, so over 100 years old. Hope that helps

Original maps of that date will be out of copyright so there should be
no problem. Certainly the length of copyright used to be 50 years but I
was told that in recent years it had been increased to 70 years.
Can anybody else on the list either confirm or deny this?
