In their book "The History of the Bristol and Somerset Coalfield" Down and
Warrington claim that James McMurtrie, manager of the Radstock collieries
from 1863 to 1904, was also chairman of the Great Western Colliery Co. In
view of the fact that his predecessor, George Clementson Greenwell, was
severely rebuked by his employer for his involvement with the Westbury Iron
Co which also owned collieries in Somerset, this seems unlikely. Has anyone
come across any evidence to support this claim?
