This course is intended to give an overview and introduction to qualitative
research methods, as used in the social sciences and increasingly in health
services research.
The course is open to anyone who would like to understand the use of these
methods (including interviews, focus groups, participant observation) and
begin to learn how to use them. Attendees do not need to have any previous
background or knowledge of qualitative research methods, although
experience of, or ideas about, a research project using these methods will
make the course more relevant.
Topics to be covered include: what is qualitative research?; an overview of
methods, schools of thought, history; getting started (sampling techniques,
equipment, field-notes, recruitment); interviewing (devising
schedule/checklist of topics, interview techniques, tips); focus groups
(methods, tips, facilitation techniques); anthropological approaches
(ethnography, participant observation); analysing data (constant
comparison, descriptive accounts, theorising, presenting findings); using
qualitative research methods in HSR (exploring and working up attendees'
research ideas).
There will be thirty hours of teaching, including introductory talks and
small-group work. At least 50% of the course will comprise practical work
to try out techniques.
