Dear Fellow List Members,
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Durham (England) is offering
two lectureships. Since it has a long-standing commitment to the history of
science and medicine, the following advertisement perhaps might be of interest
to any historically-minded philosopher (including the philosophy of science and
bioethics) whose interests fall within the broad categories mentioned below.
Yours,
Matthew.

UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM
DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
LECTURESHIPS
Reference Number 0407
The Department of Philosophy seeks applications for two Lectureships Grade A,
one tenable from January 2005 and the other from October 2005. Candidates may
offer expertise in any area of philosophy though we are particularly seeking to
increase our teaching capacity in applied ethics, political philosophy,
metaphysics, logic, philosophy of science and philosophy of religion.
The Department
The Department received a grade 5 in the 2001 RAE and a maximum score of 24 in
the last QAA Subject Review. It currently has eleven full-time teaching
members of staff and provides a programme of single and joint honours degrees
(with Classics, English, Politics, Psychology and Theology), plus Taught MA and
postgraduate Diploma courses. There are currently 36 full- and part-time
research students registered in the Department. Demand for entry to our
undergraduate degrees is high, with around 1000 applications annually for a
quota of 66 places. Philosophy modules are also taken by many students on
other degree courses, including Natural Sciences, Combined Honours in Arts,
Combined Honours in Social Science, and PPE. Members of the Department pursue
a wide range of research interests and we are developing integrated research
groupings in (1) metaphysics, philosophy of science and philosophy of mind; (2)
theoretical and applied ethics, including environmental ethics; (3) history and
philosophy of science and medicine. The Department provides a lively research
culture through weekly seminars, lunchtime workshops, regional meetings of the
RIP, the postgraduate philosophical society (Eidos), the publication of an
international postgraduate journal (Philosophical Writings), and a regular
stream of visiting international scholars. Staff have the right to apply for
Research Leave for one term in every seven and are encouraged to apply for
departmental and external funding for research projects and conference
attendance.
The Department is located in an attractive eighteenth-century building in the
centre of Durham and close to lecture rooms and student facilities. The
University Library is ten minutes' walk away and has excellent holdings, both
of books and journals, in Philosophy; there is also a small departmental
library.
The Post
The successful applicants will be appointed as Lecturers in Philosophy (Grade
A). They will be responsible to the Board of Studies in Philosophy. Precise
teaching commitments and administrative responsibilities will be determined by
the Chair of the Board of Studies in Philosophy. The appointees will be
expected to contribute to the teaching modules in the undergraduate programme
and to the Taught postgraduate programmes. They will be required to make a
substantial contribution to the research output of the Department, and to
undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time.
Informal enquires may be made to the Chairman of the Board of Studies in
Philosophy, Dr Geoffrey Scarre. Tel. 0191 334 6556. E-mail:
