Researcher/Cataloguer
Cinemagazines and the Projection of Britain project
British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC)
Salary: circa £20,000 p.a., equivalent BFI Scale C
The BUFVC is seeking a Researcher/Cataloguer to work on a three-year
project, funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Board, entitled
'Cinemagazines and the Projection of Britain'. The project aims to research
the history and output of British cinemagazines, weekly or monthly
information films produced between 1918 and 1982. It will explore the ways
in which the cinemagazine was used to construct images and reinforce values
of British life, particularly films for overseas distribution. Among the
cinemagazines to be covered will be Ideal Cinemagazine (1926-1934), Britain
Can Make It (1945-1947), This Week in Britain (1960-1978) and Look at Life
(1959-1969). The project will add details of 25,000 cinemagazine stories to
the BUFVC's acclaimed British Universities Newsreel Database
(www.bufvc.ac.uk/newsreels), creating a unified national record of over
185,000 items. The project will also produce a Researcher's Guide to British
Cinemagazines publication.
The Researcher/Cataloguer will work with a Senior Researcher, firstly, to
create a database of British cinemagazines and secondly, to create a body of
research that will establish the cinemagazine as a lasting subject of
academic interest. The project aims to encourage other avenues of research
through cinemagazine content, particularly areas of national identity,
colonialism and social history.
The Cinemagazines and the Projection of Britain project is led by BUFVC Head
of Information Luke McKernan. It begins April 2004 and ends March 2007.
The appointment will be made as a one-year contract, expected to be renewed
annually for three years.
Applications should be submitted on or before 27th February 2004. Interviews
are planned to take place during the week commencing 8th March 2004.
