JOB AD PART TWO:
Continued from previous post:
Building for the future
Our campus continues to develop. We have in 2003 opened the teaching
building for the new Brighton and Sussex Medical School, expanded the
Innovation Centre, developed a new centre for genome research, and
created the £9m Freeman Centre, the largest international centre for
science, innovation and technology policy research.
Lifelong learning
Sussex is strongly committed to expanding its local and regional role. A
central part of its mission is to contribute to the enhancement of the
economic, educational and cultural life of the locality and it has
formal relationships with over a dozen colleges of further and higher
education in the region. The University is also committed to the
principle of lifelong learning. This is put into practice through its
Centre for Continuing Education, which offers short courses both on the
campus and at locations throughout the county.
1. The Sussex Institute
As part of a major reorganisation of the University, the Sussex
Institute was established August 2003. The Institute includes four
distinct units:
€ the Centre for Continuing Education
€ the Sussex Law School
€ the Sussex School of Education
€ the School of Social Work and Social Care.
Although each school or centre within the Sussex Institute has a
specific teaching and research remit, the Institute is united by a
shared purpose of Œenabling positive change in individuals and their
societies¹. This common approach also includes looking out from the
University to provide essential knowledge and skills relevant for the
complexities of the 21st century. In our research and teaching and
learning we are concerned especially to provide the advanced knowledge
and skills needed to understand the present and make the most of the
future.
The Institute offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary research and
teaching. It is developing a number of teaching programmes, such as the
MA in the Management of Change, that draw on interests and expertise
across the Institute. A number of interdisciplinary research themes have
also been established including children and young people, international
education, and community development. In total the Sussex Institute has
about 70 academic staff, a large group of part-time teaching and related
staff and 30 administrative staff.

2. The Department
The Centre for Continuing Education is the University¹s specialist unit
offering part time study, and is the 'flagship' for the University in
its interactions with the wider community. About 2500 students take CCE
courses every year (equivalent to about 550 full time students),
including Open Courses that are offered throughout the Sussex region,
mostly in partnership with other adult education providers; and
award-bearing certificates, diplomas, degrees, postgraduate diplomas and
MAs. CCE¹s three Subject Groups (Arts, Landscape & Locality Studies,
Social & Critical Studies) ensure the intellectual quality and coherence
of our courses and programmes. CCE has approximately 17 fte core
academic staff and about 200 part time tutors. CCE academic staff are
research active within different subject areas, with a grade average of
4.6 at the last RAE. For further details about CCE and our programmes,
see the CCE website at www.sussex.ac.uk/CCE/.
CCE's media studies portfolio is located within the Social & Critical
Studies Subject Group, and includes a range of open courses and two
undergraduate certificates (Internet Studies; Media and Communication
Studies). Each certificate is a two-year programme and current practice
is to start the certificates in alternate years. The certificate courses
are also options in CCE's BA in Cultural Studies and the BA in Creative
Studies. The Certificate in Media and Communication Studies is currently
being remodelled to include an expanded element of broadcast production
training.
