New grant helps museums, libraries and archives get behind national Veterans campaign
A £2 million grant fund has been set up to enable museums, libraries and archives across the country to get involved in Veterans Reunited, a major lottery-funded national campaign to mark the 60th anniversary of the end Second World War.
One of the central strands of the Veterans campaign is Their Past Your Future, a unique project which gives young people the opportunity to learn first-hand from veterans about their experience of the Second World War. The project will centre around a ground-breaking travelling exhibition developed by the Imperial War Museum which will visit sites across the country to give children the opportunity to learn more about the events leading up to the War and speak to the generation who took part.
The £2 million lottery grant is being made available through MLA to enable museums, libraries and archives in England to take part involved in this important project, which will run from February 2005 to February 2006.
MLA Chief Executive Chris Batt said: "Their Past Your Future is such an important project. It will give children of all ages a better understanding of the events leading up to the War and to learn from their grandparents and great grandparents what life was like then. The Imperial War Museum is developing a truly innovative exhibition, and we want as many people as possible across the country to be able to take part.
"Our sector has something very important to bring to the Veterans campaign and we want to encourage all museums, libraries and archives - whatever their size, wherever they are - to register for an application pack to get involved in this project."
There are two ways for museums, libraries and archives to get involved: either by hosting the travelling exhibition (either on site or at an external space), or by adding value with events and activities to support the programme. Bursaries of between £15,000 and £25,000 are available.
MLA is asking people to register for an application pack by 23 June 2004 at [log in to unmask]
