An introduction to Web Usability and Accessibility
On the 4th November 2004, UKOLUG will be presenting this event at CILIP
headquarters, Ridgmount Street London. The aim of this course is to provide
an introduction to usability testing and accessibility requirements. It is
an enhanced version of a very successful UKOLUG course held in London in
February 2004. Martin White, Managing Director of Intranet Focus Ltd, will
lead this event.
The cost (including lunch and refreshments) will be, for UKOLUG members,

Course Contents
There is now a considerable amount of evidence to show that usability is a
key issue in effective access to web resources, whether through a web site,
library portal or an intranet. In parallel organisations are also becoming
aware of their responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act,
and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act to provide accessible
web resources.
The course will cover:
Basic principles of usability testing
Similarities and differences between web sites, intranets and portals
An introduction to the main usability tests - heuristic evaluation,
cognitive walk-throughs, task-based testing
Designing and budgeting for usability tests
The Web Accessibility Initiative guidelines (WAI)
Resources on usability and accessibility
There will be an opportunity to do some practical assessment of web sites,
though not on an individual basis
