Looking at Sarah's response and my original message, I think perhaps that
I did not make myself clear on the matter of lobbying.
I recognise all the advantages. I meant that UKOLUG/CILIP should be
lobbying to ensure that personal information is handled appropriately and
transparently; that members of the public are always aware of the ways
that data will be used and shared; that sufficient information management
checks are in place to ensure correct, accurate use and no misuse; and
that there is no function creep - where data collected for one or two
specific purposes is suddenly found to be used for other, different
purposes.

In the UK, as I understand it, there will not be a single database but,
instead, data sharing between agencies. The possibilities for errors
creeping in seem endless.
It should be the citizen's right to ensure that the data held on them is
correct and accurate.
