This is to advise of a forthcoming feature on Open Access on Radio 4 at 8pm on Tuesday 21st December: "Publish or Be Damned". The programme makers conducted a number of interviews with publishers and open access advocates and community figures. The programme itself is on for 40 minutes. It is not known what editorial "line" will be taken but proponents of open access hope it will serve to raise the profile of open access and by extension, the growth of both publication-charge journals and of institutional repositories.
From the BBC website:
Tuesday 21 December 20:00 Publish or Be Damned
Scientific publishing is undergoing a revolution, with scientists and policy makers fed up that valuable research is being locked away in expensive subscription only journals.
Now, writers of the material are launching their own competing journals and giving away the results for free. But not everyone is happy. In Publish or be Dammed, Richard Black examines each side of the debate and assesses the likely consequences for science.
[The programme will be repeated on Sunday 26 December at 5.00pm. In addition, the BBC website offers the opportunity to listen again to many of its programmes athttp://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml]
