Hi,
Many, many thanks to everyone who replied whether you proffered advice or
simply indicated that you would be interested to know what the advice was!
I have cut and pasted responses - I hope the respondees don't mind - to put
this summary together.
The first step is to get the British Library Complete UKMARC to MARC 21
conversion tables and the checklist of amendments produced in June 2004.
http://www.bl.uk/services/bibliographic/marc21move.html
Then using the data supplied by your LMS, detailing your localisms you can
look at the tables and determine:
"1 What you currently do
2 What would you like to have in your bib records?
3 Where "what you currently do fits into MARC 21
4 What other fields you need (or may need in the future) to accommodate
details listed in 2."
or put another way:
"I sat down with the BL tables to decide where I
agreed with them and where I didn't, came up with solutions for our local
fields and practices and then worked very closely for six months or so
with our LMS supplier."
You will need to establish from your LMS supplier how they are going to
carry out the conversion and the costs involved and get your project
timetabled.
Thanks again everyone.
Regards,
Jane Daniels
