I am a 'web developer', and I perform a lot of e-learning, user training and similar functions in an academic library supporting academics and students, but my title implies I am purely IT. I also used to be under an 'acacemic services' team but am now under 'technical services', my role is unchanged but the managment has. I think we only have 1 senior staff member with chartership / library qualifications.
I think there is an increasing trend away from traditional librarianship, the question is will the modern information professional be regarded with the same professionalism as librarians of previous generations? Will we see a break in the relationship between CILIP and modern library roles? I know I am hard pressed to have any CILIP involvement due to the attitudes of management to professional bodies.
I found myself arguing today for training on issues like data protection, copyright etc. I think a broad spectrum of interest in information legislation is necessary regardless of the individual's function.
