Introduction to the Design and Analysis of Experiments

 University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield

 Tuesday 12th April 2005

This one-day course will be of interest to everyone who wants to be able to
identify the important factors influencing a process. It will show how, with
a minimum of experimentation, the important factors can be identified from a
list of possible factors, how knowledge of the important factors can be used
to predict process behaviour and how recommendations for process
optimisation can be obtained.

Introductory level. No prior statistical knowledge necessary. All necessary
statistical concepts will be introduced during the day.

Outline of course:
The day will begin with participants performing a two-level factorial
experiment to investigate the effects of three factors on a response
variable. While analysing the results from this experiment we will discuss:
*factorial experiments,
*two-level factorial experiments,
*main effects and interaction effects,
*one factor at a time experiments,
*the normal distribution,
*normal and half-normal plots,
*analysis of variance tables,
*statistical models,
*data transformations.

Using a computer to simulate some experimental results we will then perform
a one half fraction of a two level factorial experiment. Analysing the
results from this experiment will enable us to discuss:
*aliasing of effects,
*design resolution,
*higher order fractional factorial experiments,
*saturated designs.

The day will end with a demonstration of how the statistical computer
package Minitab can help with the design and analysis of two level factorial
experiments.

The course instructor: Roger Jones, MSc, CStat, FIQA obtained an MSc in
Statistics from Birmingham University in 1970, became a chartered
statistician in 1993 and has been a fellow of the Institute of Quality
Assurance since 1996.

Venue: University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield
Date: 12th April 2005

Course fee: £295 including zero V.A.T.

Discounts are available for those attending more that one course, research
students, those on limited incomes, and University of Hertfordshire staff
and students.
