Vacancy for Geophysicist at British Geological Survey, Edinburgh
The British Geological Survey (BGS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council, is the UK's premier geoscience strategic mapping and
research organisation. A vacancy has arisen for a Geophysicist at our
Offices in Edinburgh.
The BGS National Geomagnetic Service is responsible for acquiring,
processing and distributing geomagnetic data which is used to produce maps
and models of the geomagnetic field. These are used for a wide variety of
important applications, including directional drilling for oil. BGS magnetic
observatories provide real-time data monitoring space weather conditions,
important for ground-based systems including electricity distribution. You
will be responsible for a programme of geomagnetic surveys to cover a
UK-wide network of stations and, working as one of a team, support the BGS
observatory operations. Duties include making UK repeat station
measurements, routine service visits to the observatories, data processing,
and assisting in the development of data acquisition systems.
Qualified to degree level in Physics/Geophysics or a related subject, you
must be able to demonstrate an interest in geoscience and be willing to
undertake fieldwork. Experience in electronics or electrical engineering
would be advantageous.
Salary and Conditions:
Salary will be a minimum of £16,650 per annum rising to £19,520 per annum
after three years service. Working hours will be 37 hours per week. A
generous benefits package is also offered, including a final salary company
pension scheme, childcare allowance, 25 days per year annual leave and 10½
day's public and privilege holidays.
