Dear Mike
There is no question that UK should continue to subscribe to IUGG. I agree
with the assessment on the web site of RAS interest in the various
disciplines. Whatever one may think of individual conferences run by IUGG
or its associations, they are the premier international meetings and the
international cooperation they sponsor are critical to our science.
As for who pays, this reduction in parliamentary grant in aid seems
sinister, but if the societies have to contribute, so be it. There is
clearly substantial interest in IAGA, IASPEI and IAG at least. The split
with the Geol Soc is presumably to be decided.
