Hello,
Do check out Rey Chow's _Primitive Passions_. In it, she
talks a lot of the theory of seeing film as ethnography,
using examples from the repertory of recent Chinese
cinema, such as works by Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige
(_Farewell My Concubine_). Also, in the last chapter of
the book, Chow gives a very intriguing reading of Walter
Benjamin's "The Task of the Translator."
have fun,
wendy
