The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active
research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of
research funded by the National Science Foundation. The new REU program
solicitation has been published: http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf04584
. The most significant change is the new deadline for REU Sites proposals
which is Tuesday, August 17, 2004. For additional information please see
the website at http://www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/reu/start.htm or feel free
to contact Michelle Costanzo (703-292-7323) or Bonney Sheahan (703-292-7291)
with your questions.
The NSF Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science, and Technology program
- www.nsf.gov/sbe/ses/sdest - supports research on ethical and value
dimensions in the interactions of science, technology and society, and
research on policy, science and technology. It would like to encourage
faculty who do research in these areas to consider submitting a proposal to
the REU program for a summer REU site project. REU Sites are based on
independent proposals to initiate and conduct undergraduate research
participation projects for a number of students. The projects may be based
in a single discipline or academic department or be based on
interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a strong
intellectual focus. Undergraduate student participants in Sites must be
citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
REU Sites are encouraged to involve students in research who might not
otherwise have the opportunity, particularly those from institutions where
research programs are limited. Thus, a significant fraction of the student
participants should come from outside the host institution.
