List members will be aware from earlier posts that the transcripts of
evidence at the Bichard Inquiry are available online.
Last week evidence given included that of the DPO at Humberside.
I would suggest that the transcripts as a whole are an invaluable resource
to DPOs. For Police Authority DPOs both compulsive and compulsory.
The forensic dissection by Counsel provides a wealth of questions that all
DPOs could usefully apply to their own roles.
Although we must all await the outcome, one of the clearest themes emerging
for DPOs is the need to step back from their roles and question how this
fits in with wider information management auditing- adequacy and fitness
for purpose. The transcripts highlight that while there was an admittedly
patchy focus on retention periods it didnt seem to be any ones job in
particular to examine critically the extent to which the information
systems worked in terms of their main objectives.
