Subject: Critical Research in Information Systems
Callfor participation: Critical reflections on critical research in
information
systems. The 2nd international workshop to be held at the University of
Salford on July 14th 2004.
Lynette Kvasny from Penn State University will give the keynote address.
Her talk is entitled: 'On the Existential Problem of Evil and Information
Technology in the Hotel Civilization'.
In this talk, I address the existential problem of evil. By the existential
problem of evil, I mean the undeserved harm, unjustified suffering, and
unmerited pain experienced by human beings. Using the digital divide as
an example, I will make a case for how and why information technology
and its cultural producers are deeply implicated in the creation of an
imperialist discourse that uses dehumanizing science to legitimize
inequality and universalize the particularities of the United States. The US
has been described as a hotel civilization that doesn't wrestle with evil,
misery, or pain. In a society in which problems tend to be alleviated with
the push of a button, the ingestion of a pill, or the will to power, how are
concerned individuals to engage in serious discussions of suffering? I
close with thoughts on the role of critical information systems researchers
in alleviating the existential problem of evil and information technology in
the hotel civilization.
Other speakers will be:Kathy McGrath 'Doing critical research in IS: a
case of theory and practice not informing each other' ; Stephen Probert
'What is an information system' ; Dubravka Cecez-Kecmanovic
'Information Systems Development as discursive practice - revisiting
research paradigms' ; Bernd Stahl 'The Ethics of critical IS research' ;
Bruce Robinson and Francis Wilson 'Context is not enough: towards an
ontological foundation for critical IS research' ; Melanie Wilson and Anita
Greenhill 'A critical deconstruction of promises made for women on behalf
of teleworking'
