* 'Patrolling with a Purpose: An Evaluation of Police Community Support Officers in Leeds and Bradford City Centres' by Adam Crawford, Sarah Blackburn, Stuart Lister & Peter Shepherd, pp. 89.
This report evaluates the first year of PCSO deployment in Leeds and Bradford city centres. It draws upon extensive interviews and surveys of PCSOs and members of the public, interviews with police officers and other key workers operating in the two city centres, as well as crime data to evaluate the impact of PCSOs on community safety. The report explores the contribution of PCSOs in the context of the ‘extended policing family’ and examines the activities and roles that PCSOs perform. It outlines lessons gained from the West Yorkshire experience and suggests important recommendations concerning the future deployment of PCSOs. The report will be of special interest to police managers and researchers, as well as all those interested in community safety and the changing face of modern policing.
