                      Preliminary Call for Papers

                              ASIAN'04
                Ninth Asian Computing Science Conference
                          www.asian04.org

                        Chiangmai University
                        Chiangmai, Thailand
                        December 8-10, 2004

In many areas of Computer Science, the focus of efforts is moving away
from concerns of data to address the information that this data
represents. This movement is reflected also in patterns of employment and
in the development of branches of other sciences that employ Computer
Science techniques as tools in their study. A challenge for Computer
Science is the development of concepts and tools that support more
directly the information-oriented nature of many computerized tasks.

The theme of this conference is HIGHER-LEVEL DECISION-MAKING.
"Higher-level" refers to a decision-making process that may involve the
gathering of information, reasoning, analysis, reflection, negotiation,
and the synthesis of a decision and its justification. Whether the final
decision is made by a software or human agent, large parts - and perhaps
all - of such a process can be automated. In pursuit of this goal, new
concepts and techniques in the design and development of such processes
and their elements are needed.

There are several areas of Computer Science that address individual
elements of such processes. The aim of the conference is to encourage such
work in a broader context.

This conference is dedicated to Jean-Louis Lassez on the occasion of
his fifth cycle birthday. There will be a special session of invited
speakers to honor him.

SCOPE
Papers are invited on all aspects of Computer Science, but particularly sought
are those addressing aspects of the theme. An indicative list of such aspects
includes:

    - machine learning, data mining
    - modeling, simulation
    - mathematical optimization, constraint programming
    - meta-heuristics
    - rule-based languages, logic programming
    - database systems, knowledge-bases
    - information integration
    - decision sciences
    - audit, authentication, cryptography
    - agent-based systems
    - artificial intelligence
    - knowledge presentation, visualization
    - computational economics
    - bioinformatics, life-science informatics

BACKGROUND
The series of annual Asian Computing Science Conferences (ASIAN) was
initiated in 1995 by AIT, INRIA and UNU/IIST to provide a forum for
researchers in computer science from the Asian region and to promote
interaction with researchers from other regions. The first eight
conferences were held, respectively, in Bangkok, Singapore, Kathmandu,
Manila, Phuket, Penang, Hanoi, and Mumbai. In addition to support
from the host countries, they have also been sponsored by INRIA,
France, UNU/IIST, Macau and NUS, Singapore. The proceedings have
been published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science by
    Springer-Verlag.

SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS
    Asian Institute of Technology
    National University of Singapore
