We are very pleased to announce the provisional programme of the 28th
Annual
Conference of the Society for Caribbean Studies (attached), which will be
held July 1-3, 2004, at Lancaster University, in Lancaster, England.
Conference highlights this year will include a special presentation by the
Bridget Jones Award winner, Jamaican musician and researcher Olive Lewin;
and a performance by the British-born Bajan poet Dorothea Smartt of a piece
called 'Bringing It All Back Home', originally commissioned by the
Lancaster
Litfest. There will also be a tour of Lancaster's slave-trade heritage with
Black Atlantic cultural historian Alan Rice and local historian Melinda
Elder on the Saturday afternoon following the conference. For those
interested in the arts in the Caribbean we will have several interesting
panels on the visual and performing arts. And there will be a special
roundtable discussion on issues of teaching Caribbean Studies.
In this year of turmoil in Haiti we also acknowledge the bicentennial of
Haitian independence with two special panels around topics of the
commemoration and representation of the Haitian revolution, including
literary and dramatic texts on Haiti produced throughout the Caribbean.
The full
conference programme will also shortly be available on our website (address
below) along with travel information.
best wishes,

PRESS RELEASE
FLORIDA, The Election Play
by Dale Reynolds
based on a treatment for the screenplay,
FLORIDA, The Election Movie
This new play dramatizes the events that lead up to the US Supreme Court's
5
to 4 move to make George W. Bush President of the United States.
FLORIDA is based on investigative reporting and eyewitness accounts,
including the
testimony of actual participants in these events. Some of FLORIDA'S
characters have been
created for dramatic purposes, and some are people you will recognize, but
either way, FLORIDA is a drama based on what happened there, before,
during,
and
after November 7, 2000. The Election Play is a THRILLER which cannot be
ignored --
unless American justice and democracy are ignored.
