The following post will not be advertised in ARC Recruitment but may be of interest to listserv members.

BRISTOL RECORD OFFICE

Research Assistant

13,863 - ,14,817 (pro rata). Pay award pending. 2 year fixed term contract.
25 hours per week

Bristol Record Office and Bristol Library Service respond to a large number of paid postal family history and local history enquiries each year. For the first time we are looking
to recruit a Research Assistant who will carry out this work on behalf of both services. Based in Bristol Record Office at B Bond Warehouse, Cumberland Basin, work will also have to be undertaken at the Central Library, College Green.

You will carry out the research using both original archive documents and printed sources, compile and word process reports to clients, keep progress records of work commissioned, time taken and achieve a set income target. You will be required to deal directly with clients and potential clients by phone, e-mail, letter and in person to advise on research costs, available information, sources and research options. You will also be expected to assist in the development and marketing of the research service.

An aptitude for reading old documents is essential and you must also have the ability to work on your own initiative and be able to organise and prioritise your work and to adhere to strict deadlines and targets. An understanding of the importance of customer service is also required together with a working knowledge of word processing and other computer applications. It would be useful to have experience of working in an archives, records or library environment and experience of carrying out family history and/or local history research, preferably in a paid capacity, is also desirable.

This post is supported by the South West Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. It is offered initially on a two year fixed term contract.

The closing date for applications is 14 April 2004.

To apply, please telephone 0117 922 4499 or e-mail [log in to unmask] quoting the job reference number 8482. Please note, we cannot accept CVs.
