Hello All,
Can I ask you all to bring collective experience to bear on this one?
We have recently been contacted by a voluntary organisation wanting advice
about their records - storage, packaging, arrangement and cataloguing, but do
not wish to deposit. They are willing to pay for an archivists time for this.
Whilst this would be fine as a one off, we are wondering if we should
establish some sort of office guideline on whether this should be considered
an integral part of our work in the same way as a talk request or a peripheral?
Should we charge for this as a service or treat it as useful work in saving
archives in the community, which may come to the record office at a later date?
We see the potential for a number of organisations to avail themselves of our
advice and do not want to start something which may prove unsustainable in the
long run. Do any other offices have experience of this and/or guidelines on how
to deal with such requests?
Any help/advice/thoughts welcome, but please reply off list to my work e-mail:
