As announced last year, the National Monuments Record is currently
undergoing a major review, which will help us to determine our focus and
role for the future, both regarding our role as an archive repository, and
our position as part of English Heritage. As part of this we are carrying
out a consultation exercise with a wide range of stakeholders. These
reflect the wide range of our current remit, and as well as archives and
archivists include archaeologists, academics and Historic Environment
Records (formerly Sites and Monuments records).
The closing date for responses is 4 February, but we will continue to accept
responses for a week or two after that.
Overall, we have had a really good response, but archivists and archive
repositories are currently under-represented - partly no doubt because of
their relatively small numbers compared with other stakeholders.
I urge you to redress the balance and respond to the consultation (you don't
have to answer all the questions!), whether or not we wrote to you
individually seeking your opinion. If you are not sure what we do, have a
look at the consultation document anyway, as it includes a useful
explanation of what we do and of the issues facing us.
You can respond on line by going to http://www.nmrreview.org, or you can ask
for a hard copy consultation document by emailing

thanks!
