Department of Geography & Earth Sciences
Brunel University
Project title: Geographies of street children in South Africa
Supervisor: Dr. Lorraine van Blerk
Stipend: There is an annual stipend of £8,500 plus fees at the UK/EU rate and reasonable fieldwork costs.
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship exploring geographical aspects of street children's lives in Durban, South Africa. The studentship is for three years, although progress will be reviewed annually. The student will be expected to spend a minimum of six months conducting fieldwork in South Africa.
Applicants should have a good honours degree in Geography or a related Social Science discipline. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field would be an advantage. Experience of using qualitative research methods is desirable, as is experience of work or study in South/southern Africa and work with children/youth.
Brunel University actively supports research with children and youth; it has established an inter-disciplinary Child Focused Research Centre, to which the student would be affiliated. Geographies of children and youth are also a focal area of research within the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences, with the staff of the Children, Youth and Gender Research Group currently working on several externally funded projects. Further details of our research can be found on the department web page: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/depts/geo/
To apply, please send a letter of application including a statement outlining why you are suitable to undertake this research, a full CV and a short sample of academic writing (e.g. paper, report or essay) along with the names and addresses of two academic referees. Applications should be sent to: Dr Lorraine van Blerk, Dept of Geography & Earth Sciences, Brunel University, Uxbridge, West London, UB8 3PH, UK.
The closing date for applications is: 17th December 2004. Interviews will be held in mid January 2005.
