'Social Determinants of Health for Policy Making'
Abstract
At the request of the WHO European Regional Office, members of the
International Centre for Health and Society prepared a brief
publication on the Social Determinants of Health. This was published
in1998 under the title the Solid Facts and was aimed at European
policy makers. The first edition was translated into 25 European
languages and has become incorporated into health policy thinking in
many European countries. It was also used in the US and the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians developed their own version of the
booklet 'For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health...'.
This presentation will summarise the 2nd edition of the Solid Facts.
(www.who.dk/document/e81384.pdf). Professor Marmot will outline the
evidence for the social determinants underlying the social gradient
in health and incorporating influences across the life course and
important domains of life.
The Solid Facts booklet distils decades of research on the social
determinants of health, the lessons from which have been formulated
into a new UCL Master course - launched at this seminar - on Health
and Society: Social Epidemiology (www.ucl.ac.uk/healthandsociety).
Professor Sir Michael Marmot, has been at the forefront of research
into health inequalities for the past 20 years, as Principal
Investigator of: the Whitehall studies of British civil servants; the
English Longitudinal Study on Ageing (ELSA) and Studies in East and
Central Europe.
