We recently upgraded to SPSS v12.
Today I tried to draw an 'interactive scatter plot' with a regression
line- easy stuff
you might think. I used the menu.
It produced a plot with the x axis as categorical; this was consistent
with the icon in the window. I checked the variable info; the X variable
was given as numeric.
It had however come in from Excel. I noticed that the variables
(whether numeric or string) which I had imported appeared in the
'scattergraph' window as 'strings' (by icon) but those I had created as
numeric appeared as 'scale' (with little ladders).
Is there some information from Excel which remains saying that it is a
string even when it is not?
I solved the problem by editing the syntax. Then I got the graph I
wanted.
However, I wondered if anyone had come across anything like this
before.
It certainly does not seem good enough for modern software.
I would add that there seems to be no instruction in the SPSS system
as to how one actually edits syntax, which seems a bit odd. I found
instructions elsewhere. Are SPSS trying to discourage use of syntax? If
so they should get the menus right.
