I have received many replies, most of them saying that $100 Euro per hour is
on the low end. I am still surprised by these numbers. I think this must be
a rate for existing clients. It is very difficult to sign up new clients at
a rate above $80/hour (for a senior statistician).
If you charge say $150 Euro per hour, how much advertising do you need to
get new clients? Are you busy 50% of the time and doing advertising /
marketing the other 6 months?
Also while my rates are usually below $80/hour, I tend to provide a flat fee
per project regardless of the number of hours. Usually this tends to make my
hourly rate goes up. I have also been approached by Indian firms that would
bill $20/hour. I submitted a project and they turned out to be more
expensive than myself - they would charge me several days of work for
something I do in a few hours.
The nice thing in the Bay Area is you can deduct mortgage and cost of
leaving is cheap compared to London. I guess I'd need to win the lottery to
get in London the house I have in the Bay Area. These lower costs / tax
savings are passed to the client.
