MRC Health Services Research Collaboration, Bristol
RESEARCH FELLOW / SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW: Statistician/Epidemiologist
Ref. STERNE PROG-1
Applications are invited for this 5 year post in the Medical Research
Council's Health Services Research Collaboration (HSRC). The HSRC is a
collaboration of MRC and University researchers, located in the Department
of Social Medicine at the University of Bristol (6* rated research
department), with collaborators from other national and international
centres linked via multi-disciplinary research and training programmes.
The successful applicant will co-ordinate the HSRC's research programme on
evidence-based diagnosis. Working in a multidisciplinary team, in
collaboration with social scientists, clinicians, statisticians and
epidemiologists, he/she will develop and apply methods for the design and
analysis of systematic reviews of diagnostic tests, and for improved
understanding of the process through which clinicians make decisions about
the conduct and interpretation of diagnostic tests. There will be
collaboration and regular contact with a group investigating similar issues
based in Berne, Switzerland.
The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the
programme, and co-ordinating the work of other staff. The main areas of
work will include: (1) understanding barriers to the optimal use and
interpretation of the evidence base on clinical diagnosis; (2)
methodological issues in systematic reviews and meta-analyses of and
decision analysis for diagnostic tests; (3) modelling and optimising the
process of diagnosis and (4) comparing the process of diagnosis in the NHS
with that in insurance-based health care systems. The applicant will
coordinate the establishment of a database of diagnostic studies and
systematic reviews of such studies, and will prepare and deliver
manuscripts for publication.
Applicants should have a good first degree, a Masters or PhD in statistics
or epidemiology, and a good understanding of medical statistics and
clinical epidemiology. They should also have excellent organisational and
project/people management skills, good time management, ability to work
well independently and in a team, and ability to communicate effectively
orally and in writing. At least 3 years' experience of applied statistical
and/or epidemiological research and experience of running research projects
is required. Experience of research on diagnostic tests, or systematic
reviews and meta-analysis would be an advantage, as would experience of
working with patients and clinicians.
This is a 5 year MRC Band 3 appointment, available from May 2004. Starting
salary (range £33,906 - £36,760) will depend on qualifications and
experience.
