SUMMER VACATION SCHOLARSHIPS 2004, DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Vacation scholarships are available in the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford for six weeks within the period Monday 28th June- Friday 6th August 2004.
The idea behind the scheme is to give a sense of academic research in probability and statistics to those who may be contemplating doctoral research after their undergraduate degree.
Successful applicants would undertake research or directed reading on a supervised project.
The scholarships will provide £50 per week for subsistence and in addition cover accodommation and meals at an Oxford college for six weeks.
We would normally expect applicants to be in the second last year of their undergraduate degree (i.e., in the second year of a three year degree or the third year of a four year degree), and likely to obtain either a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent.
Research interests of members of the Department include: Applied Statistics, Computationally-intensive methods in statistics, Medical Statistics, Operations research, Applied Stochastic processes, Mathematical Statistics and Bioinformatics. Further information is available from www.stats.ox.ac.uk.
Applications should include curriculum vitae, including details of results on examinations already undertaken at university, and a brief statement about the particular areas of interest within probability and statistics, and the reasons for the application. Applicants should ask two referees for academic references to be sent directly to the same address as applications.
Applications, including the names, addresses, fax, and email details of the two academic referees, should be sent to
Sue Wood,
Summer research student application,

Applications should also provide details the longest period of time between 28th June - 6th August during which the scholarship could be held.
There is no formal deadline for applications, but the Department will start considering applications on March 29th, 2004. To maximise the chances of success, applications should be received before this date. Decisions will be based on the merit of the candidate and the availability of appropriate supervision.
We anticipate awarding 6 scholarships.
