Happy New Year everybody,
I had 4 replies to my request about computer algebra systems for statistics. Thanks to those that responded! Three people recommended packages (1 person each): MuPad, MathCad, and Maple. These are commercial products (ie not open-source). After a bit of exploratory net-surfing, I found out about mathStatica, an add-on package for Mathematica. http://www.mathstatica.com/ It looks like it has all the features that I could imagine, and it seems the ideal thing for my needs. Not open-source, but it appears there are no open-source products that come anywhere near as close in functionality.
Cheers,
Simon.
