We are announcing three courses, which are scheduled to take place in March & April 2004. Summary information is given below.

A Review of Basic Statistics, 29-30 March. Duration: 2 days.  Price £460.  

This course builds up the basic ideas of statistics systematically and quickly. It provides as introduction to methods of summarising and presenting data, estimation, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.  Mathematical details will be kept to a minimum. 

 

A large component of the course is practical work on PCs using accessible and user-friendly statistics packages such as GenStat, MINITAB, SAS, SPSS and STATA.  Instat+, a package developed at The University of Reading, can also be used - currently it can be downloaded from our website and is free to course participants.  Microsoft® Excel may, too, be used - this requires the use of our Excel "add-in" "SSC-Stat, again, freely available to course participants.

 

Understanding ANOVA, 31 March-1 April. Duration: 2 days.  Price: £460. (A fee of £850 for attending A Review of Basic Statistics together with this course (29 March-1 April).)

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is a key technique popularly used in analysing research data. A good appreciation of the concepts underlying this technique will help you to apply it appropriately when exploring the influence of several factors on key response variables.

 

In this beginners course the theory, practice, and interpretation of ANOVA in simple designed experiments and in regression analysis will be explained, as well as the General Linear Model (GLM) on which the ANOVA is based.  Computer based practical sessions using appropriate statistics software (Instat+, MINITAB, SAS or SPSS) will help participants understand the basic ideas involved.  Data from a variety of scientific disciplines will be used to illustrate the analysis with emphasis on the interpretation of output in relation to study objectives.

 

Research Data Management, 21-23 April. Duration: 3 days.  Price: £245 per day; £690 for all three days.

Research data is a valuable resource, which is costly to collect, and researchers should want to extract as much information as possible from it both now and in the future. This requires a sound data management strategy and good data management skills from the outset.

 

This course aims to disprove any misconceptions that database packages are mysterious entities. We use Microsoft® Access by way of demonstration, although the concepts may apply to any relational database package.
