Only a clever idea if no other tests are done with it or sufficient
information given on the request forms.
Fluorescein in the quantities used for monitoring capilary permeability in
diabetics interferes with FPIA assays for more than a week post injection (
and can interfere with colourimetric assays also.

Alternatively fluorescine dye can be added to any active drug to assess
compliance. Drug companies should provide special packs where fluorecine has
been incorporated in the tablet/capsule/syryp. If a clinician suspect non
compliance they can prescribe these special formulations and the lab can
measure fluorescine in blood/urine to assess compliance.
Isn't this a brilliant idea?

Wasn't this done in the past by some Leeds academics? Prescribed Methadone
spiked with phenobarb, as I recall, in order to assess supplemental use of
non prescribed methadone. I wondered at the time about the ethics and I
wonder even more if it would get through a Research Ethics committee in this
year of non-grace.

The alternative would be to prescribe a drug which can be assayed as well to
check for compliance or would that now be considered unethical?
