Dear All
We are being asked to measure serum bile acids when:
1) The serum level has already been shown to be high and
although concurrent LFTs have also been high and indicative
of cholestasis and are now falling, the Consultant insists on
serial measurements to monitor treatment (ursodeoxycholic
acid)
2) Patients who have suffered miscarriage before 24 weeks,
BEFORE they can be discharged
Do other labs. measure bile acids under these circumstances
and are they aware of any publications which justify it?Does
anyone have any established protocols agreed with
obstetricians?
Many thanks,Phil Wills QEH,Woolwich
