ARLIS Conference Student Award

ARLIS offers a single fully-funded place at its annual conference for a full-time or part-time student working for a first degree or post-graduate qualification in librarianship and information studies. This year's conference:

THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS:
Meeting the skills challenge
St Catherine's College, Oxford, 15-18 July 2004

offers, as always, a wide-ranging and topical programme of presentations and interactive sessions. The theme of staff development aims to assist art and design librarians to confront the challenges we all face in a rapidly changing professional environment. Topics such as Knowledge management and knowledge mapping; Advanced teaching skills for librarians; Web content authorship and Mentoring are intended not only to introduce recent developments and theories in the information profession but also to assist delegates in their ongoing career development choices.

Speakers have been invited from a variety of backgrounds, including:
Mary Canavan, Director of Human Resources at the British Library
Irja Laamanen, Director of Information Services for the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health
Nick Willard, ASLIB
Sue Hill of Sue Hill Recruitment
Antony Brewerton from Oxford Brookes University
Tim Wilson Keeper, Department of Western Art, Ashmolean Museum

Oxford is the home of Britain's oldest University, and this ancient and beautiful city has a great deal to offer anyone interested in art, design, architecture and libraries! Study visits and receptions will include The Bodleian, the Ruskin digitisation project at the Ashmolean, St John's College Library and Garden Room and Modern Art Oxford.

Designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, and described by Pevsner as "a perfect piece of architecture", St Catherine's College allows delegates to enjoy the benefits of modern facilities, whilst being a short walk from the dreaming spires of traditional Oxford.

To apply for the award, please submit the following (4 copies of each):

A completed application form (copies available on the ARLIS web site: www.arlis.org.uk or from the Administrator at the address below); the deadline for receipt is Friday 28th May 2004.
A résumé listing educational background, employment history and professional activities.

The winner must confirm in writing that he/she is able to meet the requirement of conference attendance. The recipient will be expected to submit a post-conference report to the Council of ARLIS/UK & Ireland.

It is not a prerequisite of the Award that the applicants are members of ARLIS.

The decisions of the Council of ARLIS/UK & Ireland and its Grants Panel shall be final, and no correspondence regarding these shall be entered into. The Council of ARLIS/UK & Ireland reserves the right to make no award if no suitable application is received.

Application papers should be returned to:
Elspeth Hector, Hon. Treasurer, ARLIS/UK & Ireland, National Gallery Library
Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN. T: 020 7747 2830. E: [log in to unmask]
