Aloha to all,
I feel fortunate that David moved to our community after his
retirement. It was priviledge to know him as a teacher, a researcher,
an explorer/public policy analyst, to seek and be a recipient of his
kind advice, share our frustrations and successes, introduce each
other to mutual friends and colleagues, and most of all, to listen to
his personal stories. While I am loathe to count many as mentors, I
think he was one for me.
Other people have spoken of hearing his voice. In Hawai`i is
traditional to acknowledge those who are our ancestors and teachers.
I speak not as someone who is Hawaiian, but from what I understand
from what others have shared with me. These ancestors and teachers
reside with you, on your shoulders and your head. There they continue
as our guides, and to watch over what we do. (I guess this fits with
lapsed Catholic beliefs of guardian angels too.) David will continue
to be a guide, in spirit.
And I want to share a thought by another friend, as well ...
aloha - robin

This is a sad bit of news, as I always enjoyed working with him on
Pedestrian Accessibility issues when I was a Pedestrian Advocate in
Honolulu. He was a gentle teacher on good design and always willing to
help explore options and our questions.
I will miss him.
Sincerely,
