Subject: visually impaired users of electronic information services

Dear List,

I am conducting a research project which will survey visually impaired
users' views, and experiences of, using electronic information services
provided by public libraries.

The gist of this is to ask actual visually impaired users about what they
find when using e-services, to inform decision making in libraries.
This will cover awareness, usability, barriers and so on.

For this I require people willing to answer questions about their
experiences. This will happen from January 2004. This research is part of
my MSc Library and Information Studies at Robert Gordon University.

I am aware that many of my library colleagues have set up visually impaired
customer groups and support services, both general, and specifically ICT
based.
At this stage I would be very grateful for contact details of any such
groups, so that I may invite them to participate in my study.

If you can help, please return this e-mail with as many of the following
details completed:

Name of library service
For member of staff responsible for co-ordinating VIP activity, groups,
centres etc:
Contact Name
Job title
Contact e-mail address
Contact telephone number

Subject: Re: visually impaired users of electronic information services

Dear Andrew

Are you aware of the research project completed here in LISU as part
of the "Share the Vision" initiative? I think you might find it
useful in your own research.

Carried out during 2000-01, the project complemented LISU's earlier
survey of public library provision for visually impaired people. A
national survey was carried out, examining visually impaired people's
perceptions, opinions and activities regarding the relevant
information and library services that are available. The results,
based on an extensive series of interviews with visually impaired
people, identify information and service needs and preferences as
well as factors that hinder equality of access to information. A full
report entitled "Out of sight but not out of mind" was published both
electronically and in large print in November 2001. It is available
to download (in various formats) from the LISU website at:

http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/dis/lisu/public.html#stv2

Best regards

We in Westminster have looked at proprietary periodicals management systems
in the past and generally discounted them as not producing good value. Our
manual Roneo system is now creaking badly and is in need of a replacement
system, which I can't help feeling ought to be electronic.

Has any authority had any success with devising their own Access/SQL

From: "Goddard, Chris (LIFELONG LEARNING)" <[log in to unmask]>
Subject: PN facilities used in connection with murder appeal

Here in Plymouth we've just forged a new partnership with the Devon and
Cornwall Police. It's come about as a result of the particularly nasty
murder of an elderly woman at the main bus station in October.

As part of out PN logging on procedure, users have to go past a page which
replicates the D&C Police Murder Appeal poster. The aim was to get the
attention of students who use the Central Library PN facilities who might
have been in the bus station around the time of the murder. It's seems to be
a good example of communicating with a target group through an innovative
channel.

There has been considerable press interest in the initiative, with local TV
coverage planned for this evening, a radio interview with library staff
broadcast this afternoon, and newspaper coverage.

In all of this, we're stressing the availability of the PN facilities
nationally as well as locally.

The page concerned forms part of the Plymouth and Cornwall cyberLibrary
(www.cyberlibrary.org.uk) which is nearing the end of its first stage of
development (the next stage is to move it from its temporary home into the
new corporate CMS). It's the result of another partnership, this time
between the library services in Plymouth and Cornwall.
